Like many of her clients, I started seeing Ana after an injury; for me it was a pulled hamstring. I wanted to strengthen and become more flexible without a relapse occurring, so that I could get back to my previous exercise regimen. I knew that Ana could help me with this. What I didn't know, was all of the other ways Ana would help me, including alleviating pain that I'd been living with for decades.
Ana is extremely knowledgeable. She understands that the body is one system, and she looked at my injury in relation to that system. She didn't just identify the muscles that were under-utilized, contributing to injury and needing to be strengthened. She also identified the muscles that were over-used and causing my chronic neck pain. Ana was able to see and show me all of the the patterns I've built up over a lifetime - good and bad. She then focused on teaching and reinforcing the good patterns, and, more importantly, unwinding the bad ones. It didn't happen overnight. It took work and dedication on my part, but I couldn't have done it without Ana's skill and intuition. Five years later, I'm stronger, more flexible, have better posture and body alignment, and I no longer have chronic pain. A Pilates Poet
I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon Ana in the locker room after taking a Latin dance class (boy can she move!). I knew instantly that she would be the one to help me with my weak core and sore back. Every session feels like a massage for my muscles and a natural high for my brain. How can it be?…but after Ana’s sessions—I feel taller and spiritually uplifted.
Something Ana doesn’t know and won’t tell you is that…she is a poet. A Pilates poet! With her incredible command of words and imagery she can help you identify and tune into body parts you might otherwise not know exist. I always tell her she could write magnificent poetry because the images she comes up with to help me lengthen and stay aligned are so darn tangible. To keep my pelvis in neutral, she has me imagine my tailbone is a bee stinger that “stings" the Pilates table. To engage my core, she says to imagine my muscles are shrink wrapped in plastic when I’m doing plank. In one micro movement of my pelvis, she has me imagine I have a small cup of oil on my abdomen and I only want to spill a few drops before coming back to center. She is chock full of these simple, yet transformative phrases that help me understand what I’m supposed to be doing with my body. Something else Ana won’t advertise is how her work can enhance sexual sensations. I discovered that the same tiny array of muscles that support my spine and abdomen are also the same ones involved in orgasm. So my sex life has improved, because I literally can feel more during intercourse. What a bonus! Ana is also incredibly intuitive—in the first five minutes of each session she seems to identify what my body needs that day and in the overall picture. Then she goes to work with new exercises and movements—not one session is the same as another, so it’s impossible to get bored. But, most important, is that I’ve learned so much about my body and how to use my core to support every movement—from lifting groceries to hiking steep hills to dancing salsa to sitting at my desk. Amazing Teacher
Ana was one of my dance instructors. She is an amazing teacher. I feel her greatest strength is in communicating whole body awareness. I have practiced dance, Pilates, Alexander technique and other modalities of movement with Ana to help me understand my body's strengths and challenges. And not just where dance is concerned, but how to properly use my body during everyday movements or my workout regime. I worked with Ana years ago and to this day I can call on all the techniques needed to safe guard my body when taking an exercise class.
